The fault in our stars Ch. 5

Summary
After a week of not been talking Augustus finally calls Hazel. They mostly discuss the negative and positive things of Imperial Affliction. Augustus then reveals that he has been able to communicate with the Author of the book, Van Houten through his assistant. Consequently, Hazel comes up with a perfect email to Van Houten, involving numerous questions she has about the book. Finally, Hazel sends the email and calls Augustus one more time, during the conversation they discuss Augustus’s past relationship with a girl named Caroline who died from cancer.

A few days later Augustus texted Hazel saying that Isaac’s surgery was successful and that he was officially cancer free, though he is blind now. Hazel then visits Isaac at the hospital. The next morning Hazel finally receives an email from Van Houten. He answered that he feared that by answering her questions she might twist those answers into a sequel. However, he invited her to discuss the novel in person if Hazel ever finds herself in Amsterdam. Hazel however knows that she would afford such trip. She shares the news with Augustus, who asks if she has used her wish from The Genie Foundation, an organization that grants sick kids one wish. Hazel has indeed spent her wish on a trip to Disney World but a few days’ later Augustus plans a surprise date at which he tell Hazel that he spent his wish on a trip with her to Amsterdam.

Character Analysis
Peter Van Houten

Peter is the author of An Imperial Affliction, a novel Hazel becomes obsessed with.
He is also mysterious at first, as he never appears to answer fan correspondence or do anything likewise.
He is very creative as he decided that the best way to end his book was not to. In other words the book just finishes in middle of a sentence as the protagonist, who is telling the story dies.
He is also very intellectual. This is evident when he uses fancy words and smart statements in the email she sends Augustus.

Story
The story have evolved in various aspects since it first started. To begin with, the fact that Isaac is now cancer free gives a feeling that it is not all death as it is probable to be cured. However he is now blind, which will make the parts of the story about him different and more interesting. Furthermore, an advance in Hazel and Augustus relationship is evidence as Augustus sacrificed his last wish on her, so that she could go on a trip and meet her favourite author and with him.
Theme
The theme of this part of the section consist on mystery but is to never give up. This is prooven as after the mysterious silence from the author of the book after Augustus insisted persistently. He then finally found a way to communicate with him through his assistant. Additinally after he would not answer any question through email Augustus did not give up one more time and found a way to accuire a trip to amsterdam and meet him in person. This prooves that hard things can be achieved with persistent.

Thoughts
I am loving this book more as I go on reading. I really like each character roles, specially how Augustus is so adorable. When I start reading I dont want to stop.I think that the author did a very good job balancing tragedy, love and comedy in such a way that they all have an important effect in the story. And they all are a part of each chapter.

The fault in our stars chapter 4

Summary
During the night Hazel begins reading " An Imperial Affliction" a novel about a girl who is dying from cancer. Hazel loves the book because it is not sentimental in contrast with the majority of cancer books. Eventually as the book goes on Just as Anna is about to start a crazy treatment, the book ends mid sentence. Hazel likes this ending, as it depicts the way death happens suddenly, but wonders what happens to the characters that are left behind. She has even tried to write to the author but he has not responded. She then wonders if Augusts liked the book as she had recommended it to Augustus. Later that day Augustus calls and asks when he can see Hazel again, and she tells him that they can see each other when he finishes the book. She knows she is flirting with him, which is new to her, but she enjoys it.  Later that day, Hazel and her mother go together to the movies. During the movie, Augustus texts Hazel, saying, “Tell me my copy is missing the last twenty pages.” He, like Hazel, begins to wonder what happens to the other character after the book ends. When Hazel gets home she calls Augustus. As they talk, she hears something in the background. Augustus claims its Isaac crying because Monica left him. He then invites Hazel to his house; where Hazel finds Augustus and Isaac playing video games. Isaac is crying while he plays, refusing to look at Augustus or Hazel.
After the game is over, Isaac claims that Monica dumped him because she didn’t want to have to break up with him after he was blind. Isaac says she couldn't handle being with him. Suddenly, Isaac begins hitting a chair and beating Augustus’ pillows to let out his anger. In the meantime Augustus and Hazel about the books they are reading. Eventually augustus encourages Isaac to break his basketball trophies instead of hitting pillows as he could consequently sent a message to his father that he doesn't really like that sport.
Character analysis
Isaac : Hazel and Augustus mutual friend. - Its notable how Isaac is a very sentimental kid as he is devastated from he's girlfriend's breakup.

- Isaac suffers of anger problems, we can see this as he began hitting everything in Augustus room, after the breakup.

-Additionally he is a strong kid as he goes through the process of becoming blind and manages it all pretty well.

-He is also shy as at first he felt embarrassed to talk to Hazel about the brake up situation.

-Isaac can also be describes as a believer as he strongly beliefs in true love, and claimed he thought that Monica was he's.
Events
Eventhough this chapter talked constantly about Isaac, it also demonstrates how Hazel and Augustus character's are evolving and becoming happier. As the story goes on they are falling in love and shows a change of personality from both characters. For example Hazel admits to be flirting at some point, which was something she also claims that she never does. They are coming out of their bubble which involves a boring life that they didn't want to explore before they met each other. Additionally we can see a greater mother daughter relationship between Hazel and her mom, as they went from oftenly discussing to attending the movies together.
Theme
In my opinion the theme of the reading is to never give up on the people you love. This is demonstrated as Monica left Isaac because he was almost blind. He gave up in him and in their love because she claimed that she would not be able to handle he's condition. As a consequence we can se negative effects. Isaac is now devastated and cant stop crying. Furthermore he is out of control and can not stop hitting and breaking things. Monica should have stayed with her at least for a longer time but not leave him in the worst time of he's life.
Thoughts
As I go through the story I like it even more. I like the fact that it is not linear and it also focuses on the people around Hazel showing that she is not currently the only person facing difficulties in her life. Additionally I love the fact that Hazel and Augustus are both falling in love even more each time, I think that the constant flirt that goes on between them gives a story a cute side besides all the cancer drama that happens.

The fault in our stars ch 3

Summary
This chapter of the book was focused on Hazel's thirty-third half birthday. At the beginning of the book they mention how her mother likes to celebrate this fractions of her birthday often. Hazel stayed up late the previous night reading the book Augustus gave to her, therefore she sleeps in late the next morning. Her mom then decides to wake her up and reminded ehr that it was that special day, so they need to celebrate, in addition to Hazel having class. Hazel decides to celebrate with a trip to the mall an old friend. Hazel goes to class and then the bookstore to buy the first two books in the series of the book Augustus gave her. She then spent some time shopping with Kaitlyn until she exclaims to be tired and leaves Kaitlyn to go to a corner of the mall to read. As Hazel finishes the book, a little girl asks her what is in her nose. Hazel then explains that it is called a cannula, and its purpose is to give her oxygen, helping her breathe. Hazel then offered the girl if she wants to try the cannula on, the girl agreed until Hazel began to feel week and was forced to put it back on. The little girl’s mother then intervened in her daughters questionary and took her away.

Character Analysis
Kaitlyn
- Kaitlyn is Hazel's schoolmate she seems like a very nice persona and have proved to be a loyal friend, who still hangs out with Hazel despite her medical condition and current distance from society.
- Its notable how she is an stereotypical teenage girl, obsessed with shopping, boys, and gossip. We can see this when she talk about her boyfriend and life at school while she tries on multiple pairs of shoes at the store.
-Kaitlyin is also a talkative girl, we can see this as she is seating with Hazel in the cafeteria and is usually her who is telling a story, gossip or asking questions
- Moreover it is evident how Katilyn is psychorigid when it comes to punctuality, we can note this as she set an appointment with Hazel at 3:32 and arrived exactly at that time.
-Lastly Kaitlyn can also be considered a picky kind of girl. Contrary to Hazel who picked some cheap sandals, Katilyn tried on many pairs of shoes until she found a cute pair that covered her toe, which she claimed that she doesn't liked.

Events

The events in the book are moving from being focused In Hazel to being more about the people the surround her. Besides knowing more of Hazel's feeling and personality the book also introduces her closest healthy friend. Aside that it shows another side of her mother, instead of arguing with her, she is celebrating an early birthday. Besides the part where Hazel removed her breathing device for a moment shows an improvement of her medical condition. Additionally as the story evolve we can notice how Hazel is changing as she is being influenced by the people around her, specifically how she became more interested in series of books after Augustus gave that one book to her.

Themes
In my opinion the theme of the reading is not letting one problem create new ones that are not even there. Specifically Hazel lets her cancer affect her life more than it should, we can see this as she comments on the fact that Kaitlyn will be surprised she could attract a boy which proves how Hazel's cancer has lowered her self-esteem. But the previous chapter in which we can see how she is connected to Augustus demonstrate how the fact that she is not the most healthy person her love life can still have a story.

Thoughts
I feel as if the story is attracting me even more as I get through it. I am interested in how it shows every aspect of Hazel life, because even though i know that the plot of the story goes around her life story with Augustus, its good to read other character as well. Moreover I feel like i became attached to Hazel and that I understand her which makes me more interested to keep reading. Lastly I like the fact that it include many jokes and funny situations that makes me laugh . So far I am highly enjoying it and want to keep reading!
