Analysis of Character
Augustus Waters
  • He is a sixteen year old boy that has osteosarcoma.
  • Augustus seems to be falling in love with Hazel after meeting her at Support Group, this is notable as he often flirts with her and he even invited her over to his house after they just met.
  • He has a heroic personality and is interested in leaving a legacy in society.
  • He is strong and confident as he openly talks about his cancer situation
  • Additionally he is kind, helpful and open, well he was at support group at first for helping a friend and furthermore he easily became friends with Hazel.
Events

The events in the book are now centered on Augustus and Hazel. Its interesting how the tragic situation that Hazel was describing during the firs pages of the book, now turned romantic. Small events in the book that involve Hazel and Augustus are very important, for example when Augustus the mention of “cancer perks” its very important as it shows, the way in which those with cancer are treated differently than others. Additionally Augustus’ confidence in the future is very important as he proofs to Hazel that he is not that concerned about death.

Theme

I think that the theme of the story is that sometimes bad things occur to lead you to good ones, though Hazel and Augustus first connected through their shared experience with cancer, which is not a good thing at all, they quickly connect through other things like humor, pop culture, and literature and they are falling in love.

Thoughts

I am currently liking this book even more as I am highly interested in Hazel and Augustus relationship. I think that they will make a great couple am I am curious of how this relationship will evolve later on. I also like how the narrator makes it feel like Hazel and Augustus have a strong connection and are somehow similar.

In fact Hazel, who rarely speaks during those meetingscomments to one of Augustus claimsAfter the meeting was over Isaac finally introduces Augustus and Hazel, later on they are left alone and the two of them flirt a little bit, In fact Augustus invited Hazel over to his house.

Analysis of one character
Hazel Lancaster
  • She is the 16 year old protagonist and narrator of the novel who has lung cancer.
  • She has as a very "dark" personality, as she tend to relates everything around her to death.
  • She is very selfless, I notice this a she tends to keeps most people at a distance, knowing that they will be hurt when she dies soon.
  • She is very passive, in fact its this characteristic that makes her parents belief that she is depressed.
  • She reads a lot and I belief that that is probably one  of the factors that make her very smart, aside that she seems to understand everything and has an answer to everyone in the support group. However she is very quite and usually happen to keep her thoughts to herself.

Events

From the beginning of the story Hazel was introduced with lung cancer, Through the story it is revealed that she originally had thyroid cancer, though it spread to her lungs, later. Aside that, the story evolves around Hazel relationship with Augustus. Hazel life was pretty linear and boring, in fact her parents claimed she was often depressed. But then she met Augustus in some support group she attends and so far it seems as if she is falling in love. This is important as it will more likely cause a big twist to her life.

Theme
  • I think that so far the main theme is: The impact of love and how it can light up the darkest part of you and your lives.
Thoughts
I haven't read much but I really liked the book, specially because I like the main character's personality. I consider Hazel a smart, simple and selfless girl. I also like the combination that the book's plot has. It involves the tragedy of cancer with a love story, and they highly affect one another. Furthermore I think hazel way of seeing life and people is interesting and entertaining, I like her sarcastic sense of humor. I cant wait to know what is going to happen next, and  even though I have many theories I really hope that Hazel does not die.
