Summary
As close adult familiar to Hazel's illness needs to go with her and Augustus to Amsterdam, Hazel's mother will go with her. Later Hazel decides to look up Augustus’s ex - girlfriend Caroline's profile online. She thinks she and Caroline look very different but cancer made them very similar. As the day goes on Hazel's parents call her down to dinner which she was acting very cold and being very sarcastic. When her mother asks her what's wrong, Hazel says she's a “grenade" and that she might explode and injure everyone near her. She goes to her room to read and can hear her parents talking about her. She understands suddenly that she tensed up with Augustus because she knows being with him will eventually hurt him. She texts him to tell him that she can't kiss him because it makes her think of the pain she'll cause him. 
He replies that he understands but also flirts with her, to which she simply responds “Sorry.” At four in the morning, Hazel then wakes up with a terrible headache, she instantly screams and wake her parents. She feels what seems like a series of explosions in her head, in fact she even thought that she was going to die. The next thing we know Hazel wakes up in the ICU. Her father explains that the headache was because of poor oxygenation, which resulted from her lungs filling with fluid. Hazel’s father also explains her total body PET scan found no new tumors. The nurse mentions that Hazel has been out for a few days, and that Augustus has been outside in the waiting room since she arrived, though he has been prohibited from seeing her directly. On Hazel’s last day at the hospital, Augustus is briefly allowed to visit, this is when he delivers another correspondence from Van Houten. By the time Hazel finishes Van Houten’s letter she is already wondering if Dr. Maria might clear her for international travel.
Character Analysis
Augustus
- Augustus demonstrates to be a person of Character in this reading. Its evident how he cares for Hazel as he was there for her every single day, in which she was in the hospital, even though he was not even allowed to see her.
- Augustus Also showed to be respectful and descent. He always acts appropriately around Hazel parents, which also makes him a highly educated kid.
- Furthermore he is a very selfless person, as he wastes he's only wish from the foundation in Hazel, allowing her to meet her favourite Author.
- Additionally he demonstrates to be respectful and persistent. When Hazel claimed that she was afraid to kiss him because he might be hurt later on he respects her decision and did not force her to anything yet he kept flirting as he want Hazel to want him, and it seems as if he wont give up.
- Finally Augustus shows to be a good friend, as he is always their to lend a hand to everyone around him. Not just hazel but also Isaac when her girlfriend broke up with her.
Events
The story is now getting more serious. The first chapter's were mostly about Hazel and Augustus relationship, and how they began to fall for one another. It was mostly how they act together what they had in common and it also talked about Isaac and Kathleen and the people around them. However as the novel develops it is now getting into the most tragic parts of the story. The events going on are now more health related and as Hazel got very sick it is evident how her Cancel will highly affect what's yet to come interfering in her relationship and almost everything in her life.
Theme
The theme of the reading is tragedy and how things can suddenly flip. This is exactly what happened to Hazel. Everything in her life was highly and vastly improving. She met Augustus and became great friends with him, in fact its evident how she really likes him as more than friends. Moreover she was about to go to Amsterdam to meet her favourite author, who was going to spoil the end of his unfinished book. However suddenly out of no where she gets greatly ill again, and all this good things going on in her life are suddenly going to stop.
Thoughts
This book really impressed me. As I was told it was about a girl who has cancer and falls in love with a guy I already knew what to expect, however, I was wrong. Even though the theme and plot of the book seemed very cliche I really like how the Author writes it. She makes it very interesting as it is funny in many occasions and during the tragic parts of the book she knows exactly how to make it really sound serious. Finally I like how every chapter ends in a cliff-hanger i believe it gives a mystery sense to the story.
